PIAA Class 5A Girls Basketball Preview: Conrad Weiser at Peters Township

Three Berks Girls League teams are still playing basketball: Wilson in the PIAA Class 6A bracket, Conrad Weiser in 5A, and Wyomissing in 4A. Wilson plays at Upper Dublin Friday at 6 p.m. Conrad Weiser plays at Peters Township Saturday at 1 p.m. Wyomissing hosts Nazareth Friday at 1 p.m. Let's dive deeper into the 5A matchup between Conrad Weiser and Peters Township.

7-1 Peters Township (23-3)

Peters Township dipped down from 6A to 5A this season, becoming one of the favorites to win the classification. It won the WPIAL (District 7) championship over South Fayette, which was going for a fourpeat, in a 40-36 victory on Feb. 28.

Peters Township is led by 6-3 senior forward and Miami commit Natalie Wetzel, who averages 19.3 points per game with 46 3-pointers.

Freshman 5-6 point guard Taylor McCullough is the primary ball handler and averages about 10 points and five assists per game. She has offers from Kent State, UMBC, and Mount St. Mary's and interest from more.

Freshman 5-10 wing Jordyn Welsh averages roughly 5.0 ppg and has Division I interest including offers from Youngstown State, Siena, and Yale.

Senior 6-3 post Daniela Radulovich averages about 8.0 ppg and 9.0 rpg and provides rim protection with her size along with Wetzel.

Junior 5-6 guard Bri Morreale averages around 11.0 ppg and is a deep-ball threat, making 60 3-pointers at a 45-percent clip.

Needless to say Peters Township is one of the most talented teams in the 5A bracket.

"It's tough to say because we just don't know a lot of these teams," Peters Township head coach Steve Limberiou said of how far he thinks his team can go. "I will say the bracket is divided up in two ways. The bottom of the bracket is significantly harder than the top, just the way its set up in 5A."

Peters Township will not be overlooked Conrad Weiser; all teams still alive at this point in the season are good.

"They have some size and athleticism," Limberiou said of the Scouts. "[Geniva Paul] and [Lauren Grabosky] are good players. There's going to be a level of desperation from every team. I'm expecting them to come in here and give us a battle."

Limberiou plays man-to-man defense 90-percent of the time, but is not afraid to switch it up if needed.

"Having the two 6-3 girls is a blessing because there's always rim protection," Limberiou said.

Last season, Peters Township lost to Spring-Ford 74-53 in the second round of the 6A bracket.

3-8 Conrad Weiser (17-10)

Conrad Weiser finished second in Berks II behind Twin Valley and then fell to eventual Berks champ Reading High 44-28 in the BCIAA quarterfinals.

The Scouts defeated Elco 42-39 in the first round of the District 3 Class 5A tournament to qualify for states and then lost to Middletown, Northern York, and Lower Dauphin in playback seeding games.

This is the first time Conrad Weiser is playing in the state tournament since 2016. The Scouts hadn't won more than eight games in a season since that last state playoff berth until this year.

"We are preparing the best we can," first-year head coach Chris Kline said. "They are very big and very talented. It's going to be a very tall task for us but we are going to give it our best shot."

Grabosky, a 5-11 senior post, leads the Scouts in scoring at 9.9 ppg followed by Paul, a sophomore wing, who averages 8.7 ppg.

Senior guard and Kent State softball commit Alex Trevena scores 8.4 ppg and has hit a team-high 48 3s. Senior wing Sydney Spang has hit 20 3s and averages 5.2 ppg.

Senior guard Gisselle Feliciano has hit 10 3s and scores 4.8 ppg. Feliciano is dealing with an injury and her status is questionable.

Energetic sophomore guard Dylan Bossler would likely slide into the starting lineup if Feliciano can't go. Bossler has played in all 27 games this season and averages 3.2 ppg.

The winner plays either 7-3 Thomas Jefferson or 3-6 Susquehannock in the second round on Wednesday.
