Time for a quick notebook as the regular season dwindles down. Let's take a look at freshmen who have made an impact this season, the current BCIAA and District 3 playoff picture, and a check-in on former Berks players playing their first seasons of college ball.
The Future is Here
Last season, players such as Gov. Mifflin's Bella Super, Wilson's Kailani Hardy, Conrad Weiser's Geniva Paul, and Wyomissing's Karly Hyde made an immediate impact as freshmen. They've continued that impact as top contributors in the Berks Girls League as sophomores. So who are some freshmen playing key roles this season?
Brandywine Heights' Sophia Benner, the younger sister of Addison Benner, has hit a league-high 54 3s and leads all freshmen with a 12.5 scoring average. The 5-7 point guard hit 10 3s and scored a season-high 30 points in a loss to Pottsgrove in the third game of the year.

Exeter's Addison Harper is leading the Eagles in scoring (8.1 points per game) during her first season of varsity ball. The 5-8 guard has drained 11 3s. Harper has been the Eagles' top scorer in five games this season, including a career-high 14 in a win over Muhlenberg.
Muhlenberg's Kenleigh Brill has played in all 18 games for the Muhls, averaging 8.0 points per game. The 5-6 guard has also converted her foul shots at a 77.9-percent clip, making 53 total. Brill has led the team in scoring six times, including two 16-point performances in wins over Ephrata and McCaskey.
Reading High's Xiani Beatty, the younger sister of Xavier Beatty on the boys side, has been pivotal for the Red Knights by providing another ball handler and scoring option to Rashida Suber's lineup. The 5-7 guard is averaging 7.0 points per game and shares ball-handling duties with senior Yamilex Rodriguez. Beatty has led the team in scoring thrice, including two 16-point performances in wins over Pottsville and Berks Catholic.
Twin Valley's Olivia Kilgore, the younger sister of Hailey Kilgore, has been a welcome addition to Matt Hahn's Berks II-leading Raiders. The younger Kilgore is averaging 6.3 points per game and hit 11 3s. Kilgore scored a team-high 13 points in a loss to Berks Catholic.
Another Gov. Mifflin freshman? Yes, another foal. The freshmen trio of Bella Super, Brooklyn George, and Bridget Martin (not to mention Hannah West, who transferred to Schuylkill Valley and is having a great season in Leesport), sparked a youth revolution in Shillington last year. Enter Saray Renninger, the next ready-to-play freshman for Mike Clark's Mustangs. The 5-11 forward is averaging 6.2 points per game and has hit 15 3s.

Wilson had two freshmen make strong contributions last year in Kailani Hardy and Ryan Leaman. That duo has made even more strides this season to fill in the loss of point guard Laila Jones to injury and junior Violet Houck missing a few games. Freshman Jade Lee has made an impact averaging 4.9 points per game and turning into a key bench piece for first-year head coach Matt Raquet.
It takes a lot of work to earn playing time as a freshman for Berks Catholic head coach Bob Birmingham, who is Berks girls basketball's all-time winningest coach. It appears guard Abby Cannon has done just that. The freshman guard has earned more and more playing time as the season has progressed and had her best game recently, scoring a team-high 14 points in a loss to Gov. Mifflin. Cannon has played in 16 of the Saints' 19 games and is averaging 3.1 points while hitting eight 3s.
BCIAA and District 3 Playoff Picture
Twin Valley became the first team to clinch its spot in the BCIAA playoffs, which begin February 8, after clinching Berks II with a win over Daniel Boone Friday.
Reading High holds a one-game lead over Gov. Mifflin and Wilson in Berks I. The Red Knights play the Bulldogs this Thursday and the Mustangs February 3.
Wyomissing and Oley Valley are in control of Berks III and IV, respectively.
The Berks I runner-up picture will become clearer after the Mustangs host the Bulldogs Monday night. The Mustangs defeated the Bulldogs 47-45 in West Lawn in December.

Gov. Mifflin would currently receive the Berks I/II runner-up spot due to its 59-31 victory over Berks II runner-up Conrad Weiser in early January.
Schuylkill Valley would receive the Berks III/IV runner-up spot by way of its 37-35 win over Berks IV runner-up Brandywine Heights earlier this season.
The two wildcard positions would be given to Wilson (.718426) and Conrad Weiser (.627976) by virtue of highest District 3 power ranking. Berks Catholic (.580870) would be the first team out.
If the season ended today (January 26) without any seed shuffling from the seeding committee meeting, the BCIAA playoff field would be:
No. 8 Oley Valley (.569502) at No. 1 Wyomissing (.741073)
No. 7 Schuylkill Valley (.580039) at No. 2 Wilson
No. 6 Conrad Weiser at No. 3 Reading High (.713272)
No. 5 Twin Valley (.656714) at No. 4 Gov. Mifflin (.678128)
Ten teams are currently in the District 3 playoff field, which begins February 17:
Oley Valley is No. 3 out of six qualifiers in 3A. Brandywine Heights (.493298) is currently No. 8 trailing No. 6 Columbia (.529159) for the last qualifying spot.
No. 2 Wyomissing, No. 9 Berks Catholic, and No. 10 Schuylkill Valley are currently in the 10-team 4A field.
No. 6 Twin Valley, No. 9 Conrad Weiser, and No. 14 Exeter (.537221) are in the 14-team 5A field.
No. 7 Wilson, No. 8 Reading High, No. 13 Gov. Mifflin are in the 16-team 6A field.
