Berks III Girls Basketball: Top Players to Watch

Sophia Barrell-Kobryn

Senior, Fleetwood

The 5-4 guard and javelin-throwing standout returns for her senior season with the Tigers after receiving all-division honorable mention honors last year. Barrell-Kobryn was the team's leading scorer at 5.5 points per game last season. The Tigers return their entire starting lineup so they'll be aiming to improve on a two-win season.

Amelia Gassert

Senior, Hamburg

Hamburg's 5-8 all-division guard/forward is also a district champion in tennis and all-division softball player. She can score when needed, but it's her intangibles on defense and the glass where she makes her biggest impact. She's seen a lot of floor time in all three of her seasons with the Hawks and will be a valuable leader for fourth-year head coach Amanda McBreen.

Alexis Hardy

Senior, Wyomissing

Before Hardy participates in her last season of track with the Spartans and then heads off to Delaware to continue that career, she'll finish what she and her senior classmates started on the hardwood as freshmen. The 5-5 all-division guard has been a vital contributor since the beginning when the Spartans went 13-10 then 28-3 then 31-1. She averaged 6.3 points per game last season — third most on the team — and vastly improved her 3-point shot (23 3PM), which was more than she hit in her first two seasons (18).

Karly Hyde

Sophomore, Wyomissing

When Wyomissing graduated two experienced guards before last season in Maddie Campbell and Lexi Loeb, the Spartans needed someone to step up. Hyde (and the next player on this list) filled those shoes in a big way. Hyde was an all-division honorable mention pick as a freshman and will move into an even bigger role this season. The 5-4 guard averaged 3.7 points per game and hit 17 3s last year.

Kacey Maggs

Junior, Wyomissing

Like Hyde, Maggs made a similar impact offensively (3.9 ppg, 16 3s), but became one of Wyomissing's top defensive weapons. The 5-6 all-division HM guard was a menace on the wing and even had her moments at the top of head coach Aaron Anders' vaunted 1-3-1 zone to give Audrey Hurleman a spell. Maggs, a High Point lacrosse commit, will be even more valuable as Hurleman is recovering from a knee injury expected to keep her out until January, at the earliest.

Emily Miller

Senior, Fleetwood

The returning all-division honorable mention selection is head coach Courtney Mitchell's defensive ace. The 5-6 guard typically defends the opposing team's best player and is a leader on the court. After averaging 2.7 ppg last season, she's looking to make a jump offensively.

Shayna Morales

Senior, Hamburg

The 5-9 senior forward is one of three returning starters for the Hawks, who have quietly been creeping up the Berks III standings in the McBreen's four seasons as head coach. Morales averaged 3.9 points per game last season. She's gotten varsity minutes the past three years with the Hawks improving from 3-8 to 4-7 to 5-6 in divisional play. Can they break .500 next?

CC Reali

Senior, Schuylkill Valley

Reali, an all-division HM pick, averaged 4.8 points per game last season and hit 22 3s, but it's her all-around effort and grittiness that helps head coach Jason Bagenstose's Panthers win games. The 5-6 guard always seems to secure loose balls and gather hustle rebounds. She'll be Bagenstose's senior leader this season.

Elyssa Sellers

Junior, Schuylkill Valley

A sleeper pick for Berks breakout player of the year, the 5-5 guard is the next prolific guard in Bagenstose's system. The lefty has a smooth offensive game with most of her points coming inside the arc with midrange jumpers and drives to the basket. Sellers played as both a starter and sixth man last season, but she'll be the go-to scorer with the graduations of Juliana Stichter (13.8 ppg) and Natane White (7.1 ppg). Sellers averaged 7.6 last season.

Amaya Stewart

Senior, Wyomissing

Surprise! If this list wasn't ordered alphabetically by last name, the 6-1 Albany commit would be at the top. Few have had the individual and team success Stewart has had up to this point of her career and it's time for the final ride. The walking double-double averaged 19.5 ppg last season, second most in the league. The questions for her senior season tell it all. Can she become a three-time Berks Player of the Year and All-State selection? Can she lead Wyomissing to three straight Berks and District 3 titles...and a deeper run in states?

Others to watch: Fleetwood senior Courtney Bowles, Hamburg sophomore Norah Davey, Hamburg senior Ashleigh Guers, Fleetwood junior Teagan Hilburt, Fleetwood senior Morgan Koehler, Wyomissing senior Lily Marshall, Wyomissing sophomore Addy Loeb, Wyomissing sophomore Lily Paolini, Schuylkill Valley sophomore Hannah West, Schuylkill Valley sophomore Hannah Yobb.
