Super Milestone: Gov. Mifflin Junior Hits 1K as Mustangs Hold Off Reading High

  • Jan 7

Gov. Mifflin's current roster has a few connections to former Mustangs in the program's exclusive 1,000-point club.

Sophomore Saray Renninger's mother — Chiara Sockel Renninger — is part of the club. So is junior Bridget Martin's sister — Jen Martin.

Those connections extended beyond former players Tuesday night when their teammate Bella Super became the 12th Mifflin girl to join the club.

Super entered the game needing 15 points to reach 1,000 career points and averaging a Berks-high 20.4 points per game. The 5-8 guard showed no signs of nerves, scoring 23 of her game-high 31 points in the first half as the Mustangs held off Reading High for a 59-55 win in a Berks I matchup at the historic Geigle Complex.

Super drilled one of her signature deep 3-pointers from the right wing with 5:44 left in the second quarter. When the ball fell threw the hoop, she didn't initially realize what had just happened.

"I didn't know it in the moment, but I heard everyone scream," Super said. "It was a good moment for me. It's always something I've talked about with my dad and something we're really excited for. I have a lot of family here with me so it was good to do it in front of them."

Sometimes coaches will purposely try to manage the game so their player can reach the 1K mark on their home court. The shiny, roughly two-year-old Governor Mifflin Athletic Community Center would have been a worthy venue. Doing it at the historic Geigle Complex against a division rival isn't a shabby second option.

"I love the vibes here," Super said. "This was a good school to score it at. It feels surreal. I'm very grateful. I know it's not something all players get to. I'm just very grateful."

She is up to 1,016 career points passing Madison Koehler for No. 11 in Gov. Mifflin history, the program with the most Berks County girls basketball titles.

"I'm happy for her to get that milestone," Gov. Mifflin head coach Mike Clark said. "She just wants to win."

Super scored 300 points on the dot as a freshman, averaging 12.0 per game. As a sophomore last season, she scored 501 for 19.3 scoring average. She has scored 215 points through 10 games so far this season.

A guard who scores at all three levels, Super has deep range on her jumper, a tight handle, and a crafty layup package that makes it hard for defenders to stop her.

"It feels exciting, especially as a junior," Super added on reaching her milestone. "But I'm just excited to have a lot more season to go and a whole other season with my teammates."

The game briefly stopped after Super reached the mark as she received the game ball and snapped a few photos with her coaches and family. The 3 gave Mifflin a 21-10 lead over the Red Knights, but there was a lot of game left.

Super's high-octane 23-point first half pushed the Mustangs (4-1, 7-3) to a 37-16 lead, but the defending Berks County champion Red Knights (2-3, 6-7) were not finished in a rematch of last season's county final.

Reading's top two scorers — JilliAnn Laws and Xiani Beatty — came alive in the third quarter and the Red Knights' 11-player rotation began to wear down the Mustangs, who only played six players.

"We're not that deep," Clark said. "[Reading head coach Rashida Suber] knew that playing us last year in the county playoffs."

Beatty scored nine of her team-high 25 points and Laws scored nine of her 13 points as the Red Knights slowly chipped away at the deficit to make it 49-39 headed to the fourth.

After Gov. Mifflin took a timeout with 1:50 left in the game and the Mustangs leading 58-48, the Red Knights ended the game on a wild flurry but ran out of time.
