The idea for Berks Girls Basketball (BGB) began formulating when a great mentor of mine - Mike Drago - decided to downscale the coverage on his website to cover solely football and focus more time on his personal life.
Cheers to you, Mike! I am honored to have been covering girls basketball for Mike's site the past two years. Spoiler: You'll still see my byline pop up on his site covering football games.
But I did not want to stop covering Berks County girls basketball, especially with the level of talent that remains and continues to grow within the Reading area.
Wyomissing and its all-state forward Amaya Stewart want another deep run in the PIAA playoffs.
Wilson wants to build on making the state tournament for the first time in six years behind Laila Jones and Violet Houck.
Berks Catholic wants to rebound after the program's first losing season with a lot returning, including another scrappy, tough senior guard in Madison Langdon who has the trust of Berks girls basketball's all-time winningest coach Bob Birmingham.
Gov. Mifflin wants to take the next step with a trio of talented returning underclassmen in Bella Super, Brooklyn George, and Bridget Martin.
Reading High and its two experienced seniors Yamilex Rodriguez and Tamyia Collier (who are on the same AAU team as Stewart and Jones, by the way) want to get back to the Berks County championship like they did in 2023.
Schuylkill Valley wants to keep pace with Wyomissing in Berks III. Exeter and Oley Valley hope to stay atop their divisions after graduating each of their top players and 1,000-point scorers in Grace Reedy and Morgan Snyder.
Brandywine senior Addison Benner and Twin Valley junior Hailey Kilgore are poised to be two of the best players in the league.
There are stories to be told. We are going to tell them.
The goal of Berks Girls Basketball is to first and foremost illuminate the hard work and accomplishments of the players and teams. We hope to do this by giving readers the same exclusive insight, behind-the-scenes reaction, quality writing, and comprehensive game coverage that was provided the past two seasons on MikeDragoSports.com.
It is uncharted territory and a few bumps are expected, but the excitement is palpable with the potential to delve even deeper into this niche in the future.
We hope you join us along the way.
