Wyomissing's Amaya Stewart Breaks Scoring Record, Collects Player of the Week Honors

There are players who could seemingly win Player of the Week every week. Wyomissing senior Amaya Stewart is one of them.

Stewart tied Adrian Budischak's single-game scoring record of 36 points three weeks ago in a win against Kutztown and then produced a 21-point, 12-rebound double-double in a win over Berks Catholic two weeks ago.

Last week in a 61-33 win over Twin Valley, which had started 9-2, Stewart had 37 points to break Budischak's record and become the fifth Berks Girls League player to earn BerksGirlsBasketball.com's Player of the Week award for the 2024-25 season.

Budischak broke the record during her senior season in 2004 before playing at Harvard.

"She doesn't surprise me," Wyomissing head coach Aaron Anders said of Stewart, who also had 18 rebounds in the win over Twin Valley. "We all know that she's going toward 2,000 points, but she's just an amazing young lady."

Stewart sits at 1,519 career points. Rachel Hoffman holds the Wyomissing career points record with 1,886, which she set in 1994.

The Spartans have 13 more regular season games this season plus three potential BCIAA playoff games. Wyomissing played in three District 3 playoff games and four PIAA playoff games last season.

If the Spartans do that again and play 23 more games this year, Stewart will need to average 20.9 points per game to reach 2,000.

Only six players have done that in the history of the Berks Girls League: Daniel Boone's Wendy Davis, Schuylkill Valley's Corielle Yarde, Hamburg's Zena Edwards, Reading High's Rashida Suber, Twin Valley's Peyton McDaniel, and Kutztown's Stacey Jack.

"I don't want to just say she's an amazing basketball player," Anders said. "There's so much more to her than what you guys see, and the joy that she shares with people, and how she takes the time to spend it with others. It's been unbelievable to watch her grow and mature the way she has."

Wyomissing has won seven games in a row after an early loss to Hazleton.

"I'd say I'm not at my peak just yet," said Stewart, who leads the Berks Girls League with a 20.0 points per game average. "As a team, we're also not there yet. There are little things we can still work on. It's the little things that make the big things happen."

If you're wondering who holds the highest single-game scoring record in Berks girls basketball history, it's Hamburg's Zena Edwards with 52, set in 1985. The two most recent players to break their school single-game scoring record were Exeter's Grace Reedy (40) last season and Berks Catholic's Caraline Herb (38) in 2022.

This is the fifth time Stewart has been selected Player of the Week by either Berks Girls Basketball or Mike Drago Sports, where Berks girls basketball coverage was previously provided. Stewart won Player of the Year the past two seasons.
