Player of the Week: Muhlenberg's Lianna Martir has the Muhls Playing Spoiler

It took a little while for Muhlenberg junior Lianna Martir to get going this season after an ankle sprain against Red Lion in the Ephrata Tip-Off Tournament caused her to miss two games in early December.

The 5-2 guard has continuously progressed throughout the season and is back to her high-scoring ways during the month of January as the Muhls upset Gov. Mifflin and nearly did the same to Reading High last week.

Martir scored a game-high 19 points in a 54-50 win over the Mustangs on Jan. 21 and had a game-high 23 points in a 42-41 loss to Reading High on Jan. 24 to earn BerksGirlsBasketball.com's Player of the Week.

"She plays her best when she lets the game flow and doesn't feel pressured," said Muhlenberg head coach Xiomara Toledo, who has filled in for former head coach Wes Giddens after he resigned in December and took a medical leave.

"A big part of [Martir's] improvement has been knowing that as a coaching staff, we trust her with the basketball," Toledo said. "Her confidence is really starting to shine through and I'm so proud of her."

In 10 games in the month of January, she is averaging 13.4 points per game to boost her season average to 9.3, highest on the Muhls. Martir averaged 4.0 points per game in six games in December.

Martir has hit 23 3s this season, the most on Muhlenberg and 12th most in Berks, and has made 34 free throws at a 69.4-percent clip.

This is the first time Martir has been selected Player of the Week by either Berks Girls Basketball or Mike Drago Sports, where Berks girls basketball coverage was previously provided.

She is also the first Muhlenberg player to earn Player of the Week and joins Reading High's Yamilex Rodriguez, Twin Valley's Hailey Kilgore, Oley Valley's Izzy Buehler, Exeter's Meredith Fylypowycz, Wyomissing's Amaya Stewart, Wilson's Kailani Hardy, and Gov. Mifflin's Bella Super as BGB Players of the Week this season.

Players considered for Player of the Week honors are nominated by their coach or by members of the BerksGirlsBasketball.com coverage team.
