Reading High Sophomore Xiani Beatty Selected BerksGirlsBasketball.com Player of the Week

Xiani Beatty, a 5-7 sophomore guard, had a team-high 14 points in a loss to Gov. Mifflin Monday and 12 points, 11 assists, and seven rebounds in a win over Schuylkill Valley Saturday in the BCIAA quarterfinals last week, earning her the BerksGirlsBasketball.com Player of the Week.

Beatty, who has stepped into a leadership role as the Red Knights' floor general this season, is averaging a team-high 10.9 points per game. After breaking onto the Berks girls basketball scene as a freshman during Reading's run to a county title, Beatty continues to add more facets to her game.

"She's getting to that maturity level where she's really starting to see the game," Reading High head coach Rashida Suber said. "When she's on the floor, our energy is really, really high and she does good things with the ball."

Schuylkill Valley's zone defense flustered Beatty and the fourth-seeded Red Knights in the early goings Saturday. Reading fell behind by 10 points and committed multiple turnovers in the first quarter.

Beatty changed her approach in the second quarter and began distributing the ball, hitting teammates for open 3-pointers that changed the course of the game. The Red Knights scored 27 points in the second quarter and took control. Eventually that opened up driving lanes for the sophomore, who scored seven of her 12 points in the second half.

The Red Knights have now won four straight BCIAA playoff games dating back to last season. They'll face top-seeded Wilson in the semifinals on Wednesday at Santander Arena.

This is the first time a Reading High player has been selected as Player of the Week this season.

This is the second Player of the Week selection for Beatty, who was also selected last year, and fifth overall for Reading.

Yamilex Rodriguez was selected last season and in the 2023-24 season. Ashanti Chapman won the honor in the 2022-23 season.

This season, the Player of the Week will be featured on billboards in central Berks County and in the area of that player's school district, courtesy of Lamar Advertising. Keep an eye out for the billboards featuring Beatty throughout the week.
